Quick answer
A Frankenstein model is assembled from multiple sources — bases, hair, outfits, rigs, textures, store kitbash — without a clean integration record. It can track, render, and upload fine today. That does not predict whether the next outfit swap, hair tweak, or platform move will be quick or turn into days of patch work.
Wrong assumption
"It works in VRChat or OBS, so the file must be built right." Preview success hides stitched seams, baked textures, missing body geometry, mixed rig naming, and export-only handoffs. The bill usually arrives on edit number two — not the first screenshot that looked fine.
Looks fine until you need to change something
Frankenstein is not about whether the model looks scary. It is about whether the file was set up for the edits you still want.

Patching a Frankenstein can cost days. Replacing with a clean, integrated base can be cheaper when you know more edits are coming. Honest artists recommend rebuild when patch work would repeat on every future request — not because the edit itself is hard, but because the foundation carries debt.
When patch is OK vs when rebuild is smarter
- Patch may be OK: One planned change, single artist source, editable layers, and you accept this may be the last easy edit.
- Rebuild is smarter: Ongoing outfit or hair changes, multiple vendors with no integration owner, export-only files, or you already paid once to "fix" the same seams.
How stitches happen — usually not malice

Resale goals need more than ownership — see owning a model does not mean you can sell it and full rights is not one thing.
Origin fingerprints
Experienced reviewers look for pipeline tells — not courtroom forensics, but signals to request documentation: default VRoid or VRM proportions and bone naming, Daz Genesis-style topology, mixed rig naming from multiple pipelines, marketplace hair or outfit meshes merged without origin notes, duplicate material slots, mismatched texel density.
If you recognize these and cannot produce license links, treat commercial use and resale as high risk until documented.
What to ask before you pay

- Will you receive editable source for every part — not export-only?
- List every third-party asset (meshes, textures, rigs, scripts) and its license.
- Will this be built from scratch, or adapted from a base? Name the base.

- If the artist recommends rebuild instead of patch — is that a new scope line with its own quote?
- If resale or commercial client work is planned, require a written origin statement up front.
- Budget time for a clean rebuild if origin cannot be documented.
DJP interpretation: Frankenstein models are not always dishonest — they are often the fastest path under vague scope and no single person testing integration.
